Open Question: In antiquity, it was thought that a child came only from the dad's seed. When was this found out to be false?

Consider in Eumenides, Apollo's argument against the Furies. Also, Scientists, as late as the 18th century, thought that Mary Tofts could have changed her fetus to be a rabbit just by thinking about it. Could they have thought that the father contributed the full "genetic" makeup (anachronistic, I know) and children took on attributes of the mother just from being carried by her rather than her "genetic" contribution? Specific references to primary sources would be great. Thanks.

Open Question: castes in indian society project?

Sun, 02 Dec 2007 20:17:56 GMT
my project is to write a legend to teach the vaisya cast about how it should live and act in indian society.
what im thinking of doing is having a young confused boy who doesnt want to be a vaisya but a brahman. the story has to have a conflict, and that would then be the conflict because if you're family is a certain caste you HAVE to be that caste otherwise your moved down to the untouchables caste. i just need some help with how i should end it and why this character doesn't want to be part of the vaisya.
ill take any ideas really, just keep them comming =)

Open Question: The Bible is a remarkable book that gives us insight into how people thought in ancient times, but is there?

Sun, 02 Dec 2007 21:23:35 GMT
any rational logical argument that supports the detailed Christian theology (the Son, heaven, hell, etc) it describes.

Those pre-science people knew very little about the human body, the solar system, electricity, etc, etc. , yet they claim to
know all about something much more hidden (theology).

When people today preach this ancient theology as fact, does it in effect make the Bible appear rediculous??

Also are educated people today, who know many awsome details of both biology and the universe, betterable to speculate about "God".??

Is the purpose of religion to help people feel better about themselves and life, rather than preach "truth"?? (That is a worthwhile purpose)

Sun, 02 Dec 2007 22:05:30 GMT
I'm really excited about Christmas this year. Ever since I was about 8 or 9, I never had a Christmas with both of my parents at home (they were either working that day or they both went their seperate ways for Christmas)
and now I'm 19 and finally gonna have them with me for Christmas! So... I need some ideas for Christmas tree decorations because I haven't had one in a long time! Please If any of you have ideas It would really mean alot.

Thanx!
